U.S. private payrolls grow by 106,000

ROSELAND, N.J., Oct. 31 (UPI) -- Private U.S. payrolls grew 106,000 in October after an upwardly revised 61,000 gain the month before, a private payroll report said Wednesday.

October’s increase marked an acceleration of private, non-farm employment after three months in which the average monthly change was 43,000, ADP Employer Services said.

Most economists had expected October's private employment to grow 55,000 after September's increase, originally reported as 58,000.

The U.S. Labor Department is to report on non-farm payrolls Friday. Economists expect its figures to include an additional 20,000 government jobs not covered by ADP.

The U.S. services sector added 134,000 jobs in October, ADP said, while the goods-producing sector lost 28,000 jobs.

Small to midsize businesses added 113,000 jobs, while large-business employment fell 7,000, the fifth consecutive monthly decline, said the ADP report, computed by economics firm Macroeconomics Advisers LLC from anonymous payroll data provided by Automatic Data Processing Inc.

Construction employment fell 16,000, the 13th decline in 14 months, ADP said. Financial services lost 1,000 jobs, the third consecutive monthly decline after nearly six years of uninterrupted growth.

Construction and financial services have been hit hard by the subprime mortgage financial crisis.
