iPhone hype drowns other Apple info

SAN FRANCISCO, June 12 (UPI) -- Apple iPhone hype at a San Francisco developers gathering drowned news of Apple's new operating system and that its browser works on Windows-powered computers.

Participants in the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference said they were disappointed that Apple Chief Executive Officer Steve Jobs didn't reveal more about the iPhone or developers' role in making software to run on it, The Los Angeles Times reported Tuesday.

Announced in January, the iPhone combines a mobile phone, a digital media player and an Internet device into one package costing between $499-$599 and operating on AT&T Inc.'s cellular network.

The company is trying to keep expectations in line as it prepares for the June 29 release of one of the most anticipated new technology products. Stock has risen 42 percent this year, based largely on hopes that iPhones will join Macs and iPods as huge businesses for the computer maker.

Jobs on Monday unveiled the latest Mac operating system, known as Leopard, which will be available in October. He also announced the Apple Safari Web browser will be available for computers running Microsoft Corp.'s Windows operating system.
