Trump no-show at Black's fraud trial

CHICAGO, June 4 (UPI) -- U.S. real estate developer Donald Trump did not testify at the fraud trial of ex-media baron Conrad Black -- and won't, a Black lawyer said Monday.

The celebrity star of "The Apprentice" television show will not be called as a witness in Black's defense, the unidentified lawyer quoted in The Chicago Tribune said.

The attorney declined to explain why Trump would not appear.

The New York Post reported Friday Trump would testify for Black as early as Monday.

Trump remained in New York, his office said, without further comment.

Trump and Black had a business relationship, the Tribune said. Trump bought the Chicago Sun-Times building from Black's Hollinger International Inc. for a land-development project.

Trump also attended a lavish 60th birthday party Black threw in New York for his wife, Barbara Amiel Black, in 2000.

Prosecutors accuse Black and three other former Hollinger executives of defrauding Hollinger out of millions of dollars, and say the $62,869 party -- which Hollinger paid for -- was an example of Black's alleged disregard for shareholders' interests.

Defense lawyers say the party was a business event.
