Strike grounds Scandinavian airline

STOCKHOLM, Sweden, May 26 (UPI) -- Scandinavian airline SAS is canceling all 300 of its Swedish flights Sunday because of a continued strike by cabin crews, it was announced Saturday.

SAS canceled all of its flights Friday and nearly 100 flights Saturday after it failed to reach an agreement with the union representing 800 cabin workers, The Local reported Saturday.

The workers are seeking shorter work hours than they accepted in a contract agreement in 2004, said union representatives. Sixteen-hour work days are not uncommon and there is no scheduled meal break between flights, cabin workers said.

The union said it had accepted longer hours in 2004 to help SAS when it was in financial trouble.

SAS estimated the strike is costing them $2.6 million a day and affecting 20,000 passengers a day. The strike began Friday.
