Google revamps search results

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., May 16 (UPI) -- U.S. Internet company Google Inc. Wednesday said it would expand its main Web search engine to show images, video clips, news and other results.

The Mountain View, Calif., company said its "universal search" would help users find the most relevant information without having to think about and then use its separate specialized search services, such as image or news search, The Wall Street Journal reported.

During a search, Google now scours its indexes of the various types of information and presents what its software determines would be relevant to a query.

The results can also include books and local information, Google said.

Google handles more U.S. queries than any other search engine, but faces competition from Yahoo Inc., Microsoft Corp. and IAC/InterActiveCorp's Ask.com service.

Other search engines are planning to change their interfaces and underlying services -- including similar efforts to integrate different types of information, the Journal said.
