U.S. stocks close mixed on economy, trade

NEW YORK, March 30 (UPI) -- U.S. stock indexes closed mixed Friday after rising, falling and then partially rising again as different reports caught traders' eyes.

Strong economic reports -- including data on personal income, inflation and manufacturing -- competed with later news that the Bush administration would revoke China's exemption from U.S. anti-subsidy laws.

The Dow Jones industrial average ended the day -- and the quarter -- gaining 5.60 points, or 0.05 percent, to 12,354.35. The broader Standard & Poor's 500 stock index shed 1.67, or 0.12 percent, to 1,420.86.

On the New York Stock Exchange, 1,811 stocks advanced and 1,488 declined on volume of 3 billion shares traded.

The technology-heavy Nasdaq composite rose 3.76, or 0.16 percent, to 2,421.64.

In London, the FTSE 100 index fell 16.20, or 0.26 percent, to close at 6,308.00

Japan's benchmark Nikkei 225 index closed up 23.71, or 0.14 percent, at 17,287.65.

The 10-year U.S. Treasury note fell 5/32, yielding 4.651 percent, while the 30-year bond lost 10/32, yielding 4.85 percent.

The U.S. dollar fell to 117.84 yen from 117.98 yen late Thursday in New York. The euro rose to $1.3358 from $1.3337.
