TAIPEI, Taiwan, March 27 (UPI) -- Samsung Electronics launched its latest fusion chip Tuesday, saying it gives greater flexibility to makers of cellular phones and other consumer electronics.

The Flex-OneNand memory chip was unveiled at Samsung Mobile Solution Forum 2007 in Taipei, Taiwan, the Korea Times said.

"This kind of memory has never been seen before," Samsung President Hwang Chang-gyu said. "Manufacturers of such items as cellular phones and consumer electronics will welcome it the most.

"With our Flex-OneNand, for example, they will be able to come up with cheaper and slimmer products while offering more applications."

The third-generation fusion chip combines two memories and product manufacturers can adjust their capacity through dedicated software, the company said. The new technology is expected to sharply increase data throughput speeds. Previously chip memories were either embedded or external.
