Air travel gets pricier

FORT WORTH, Texas, March 24 (UPI) -- It just got slightly more expensive to fly three of the biggest airlines in the United States.

Delta, American and Continental airlines all announced late this week that they would raise fares by $5 on a one-way trip, the Houston Chronicle said Saturday. United Airlines and Northwest had not yet followed suit.

Two of three previous recent attempts at price hikes didn't hold, however.

"While increases so far this year have had a hard time sticking, this one may have greater success than the previous efforts," said Neil Bainton of Farecompare.com.

Airlines were having to cope with higher jet fuel prices this week and American expects those costs to remain volatile the rest of the year, a spokesman for the Forth Worth, Texas, airline said.

Airlines also are still suffering a hangover from a rash of winter storms that forced cancellation of thousands of flights.
