YouTube agrees to pull Viacom content

NEW YORK, Feb. 2 (UPI) -- U.S. video-sharing Web site YouTube said Friday it would remove 100,000 video clips after Viacom said they had been placed on the site without its approval.

The move comes after the two companies were unable to negotiate a distribution deal.

"It's unfortunate that Viacom will no longer be able to benefit from YouTube's passionate audience, which has helped to promote many of Viacom's shows," a YouTube representative told The Wall Street Journal.

Earlier Friday, Viacom, parent of MTV and Comedy Central, demanded YouTube remove the clips, saying the videos generated about 1.2 billion video streams on YouTube.

Viacom received no money for its content, which also includes Nickelodeon and Black Entertainment Television.

Viacom had held off ordering YouTube to remove its content in the hope it could reach an agreement with YouTube and its parent Google Inc., it said.

Last week News Corp.'s Twentieth Century Fox subpoenaed YouTube, demanding it identify the user who uploaded pirated copies of recent episodes of "24" and "The Simpsons."

YouTube has signed licensing deals with the CBS and NBC television networks, and several leading record companies.
