"The board believes that Michael's vision and leadership are critical to building Dell's leadership in the technology industry for the long term," said Samuel Nunn, presiding board director.

Rollins, a former Bain & Co. consultant, joined Dell in 1996 as head of U.S. operations. He became chief executive in 2004.

In February 2005 Fortune magazine put Dell at the top of its "Most Admired Companies" ranking. By November 2005, BusinessWeek published an article titled "It's Bad to Worse at Dell," about shortfalls in projected earnings and sales.

In 2006 the Round Rock, Texas, company lost further market share to rival Hewlett-Packard Co. and faced a high-profile laptop battery recall and a federal accounting investigation.

Dell said Wednesday it expected its fiscal fourth-quarter earnings and revenue to miss analysts' expectations.

Dell stock closed down 7 cents or 0.29 percent at 24.22 on the Nasdaq Stock Market. It jumped 98 cents or 4 percent in aftermarket activity.
