Google invests in Chinese multimedia site

SHENZHEN, China, Jan. 5 (UPI) -- Google Inc. said Friday it bought a stake in a Chinese multimedia Web site that lets users download music, videos, cell phone ring tones and other content.

The undisclosed investment in Xunlei Networking Technologies of Shenzhen followed Google's $1.65 billion purchase of video-sharing U.S Web site YouTube, The Financial Times reports.

Xunlei says it has 120 million users who download about 50 million files from the site a day. By comparison, YouTube has 70 million unique users a month who download 100 million videos a day.

China's fast-growing Internet market has about 130 million users, second in size to that of the United States.

Google said Thursday it would partner with China Mobile, the country's biggest cell phone carrier, to provide mobile Internet search services in China.
