TUMS aims to raise profile in St. Louis

ST. LOUIS, Jan. 1 (UPI) -- The St. Louis plant that churns out an annual 6 billion TUMS antacids to settle U.S. stomachs is taking steps to raise its profile in the city.

TUMS have been manufactured in St. Louis since being invented there in 1928 but not many people know about the factory right across the street from Busch Stadium, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported Monday.

"We're the little factory downtown that not everyone knows about," TUMS site director Stephen Bishop said.

The company has a number of plans to make itself known, including a new sign on the unmarked factory where an old neon label was removed in 2001 for safety reasons.

"We're trying to become more visible in the community," Bishop said.

He said there are also plans to give TUMS to sports fans heading to the neighboring stadium.

Bishop said there isn't even mention of St. Louis on the TUMS label, which reads "Made in the U.S.A." and gives the location of owner GlaxoSmithKline headquarters, Moon Township, Pa.
