CULVER CITY, Calif., Nov. 9 (UPI) -- Grouper.com, a user-generated content video site in California, Thursday began offering famous scenes from Sony Pictures Entertainment's library.
The new service, labeled ScreenBites, gives users the ability to embed Cuba Gooding Jr.'s "Show me the money!" scene from "Jerry Maguire" and Robert De Niro's "You talkin' to me?" "Taxi Driver" performance in blogs or Web profile pages at no cost.
Grouper, which Sony Pictures Home Entertainment acquired this summer for $65 million, hopes the free scene access will entice users to buy the DVD or digital download of the movie or TV show that contains the scene.
The ScreenBites channel includes 100 clips from many popular films and television shows and will expand to include hundreds more over the next few months.
The move aims to bridge user-generated Web video and copyright-protected content, the Financial Times said Thursday.
Like other sites that specialize in user-generated content Grouper has hit legal difficulties because users post and publish content protected by copyright. Universal Music recently began legal proceedings against the site for letting users to post music videos of its artists.
