Gas prices ending traditional road trips

ATLANTA, June 4 (UPI) -- In summer, many Americans engage in road trips across the United States, but with escalating gas prices that may be a thing of the past.

As of Friday, the national average price for a gallon of regular gas was $2.86, up 77 cents from the same time last year.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports many vacationers are changing their plans to include plane travel or closer destinations due to rising gas prices.

"We're not seeing people necessarily cancel vacations, just make adjustments," AAA Auto Club South spokesman Garrett Townsend told the Journal-Constitution.

With gas prices not expected to lower any time soon, many experts speculate the new travel plans may be a sign of things to come.

"This may be the tipping point for a glimpse of what the next decade is going to look like on other fronts: work, home and vacations," said workplace expert John Challenger.
