EU, U.S. seek natural gas from Kazakhstan

ASTANA, Kazakhstan, May 5 (UPI) -- EU and U.S. leaders are visiting Kazakhstan to explore the possibility of an eastbound natural gas pipeline bypassing Russia.

Kazakhstan Energy Minister Baktykozha Izmukhambetov told the visitors his country favored the proposal for a pipeline across the Caspian Sea and planned a feasibility study for a trans-Caspian gas pipeline.

Interest in an alternative to Russian natural gas spiked last winter when the Kremlin cut gas supplies to Ukraine in a bid to force the former satellite to pay nearly four times the price, the BBC said Friday. That cut-off reduced supplies to some southern European nations downstream from Ukraine on the same pipeline.
