Hong Kong called Asia's overwork capital

HONG KONG, April 14 (UPI) -- Overwork in Hong Kong is the most serious in Asia, as most Hong Kong industries demand that professionals cope with a surging workload, a report has found.

A Hudson Global Resources survey of around 6,000 human resources executives in Asia shows the present situation of overwork in Hong Kong is worse than the previous year.

A total of 43 percent of executives said the situation is deteriorating compared with 34 percent last year. The proportion of Hong Kong employees facing overwork ranks first among the four surveyed regions including Japan, Shanghai and Singapore, Xinhua reported Thursday.

Legal professionals have witnessed the sharpest deterioration, as 45 percent of interviewees said they felt more seriously overworked, comparing with only 20 percent a year ago. The aggravation is correlated to an increased workload as well as a shortage of professionals capable of handling initial public offerings and mergers and acquisitions.

As for the causes of overwork, more than 80 percent of those surveyed regard a sudden increase of workload as the primary one, followed by difficulties in recruiting qualified persons.
