Nigerian court hits Shell with $1.5B fine

PORT HARCOURT, Nigeria, Feb. 24 (UPI) -- The Royal Dutch Shell Group PLC has been socked with a $1.5 billion fine that a Nigerian court says is due the Ijaw people of the Delta region.

Lawyers for the southern Nigerian community, militant members of which are holding seven foreign oil workers hostage, took Royal Dutch Shell to court claiming environmental degradation, the BBC said Friday.

The Port Harcourt lawsuit came after Royal Dutch Shell did not pay the money when Nigeria's legislature ordered it to several years ago.

Royal Dutch Shell is expected to appeal the decision.
