Australians seek to buy Eircom

LONDON, Feb. 22 (UPI) -- Ireland's Eircom Group PLC, a fixed-line telecom, says it received a $2.9 billion takeover bid from Australia's Babcock & Brown Capital Ltd.

The Sydney-based company already has a 15-percent stake in Eircom, which Ireland privatized in 1999, the Independent said Wednesday.

The offer comes just two months after Swisscom made a run at Eircom.
