IRS offers grace for bogus tax shelters

NEW YORK, Feb. 14 (UPI) -- Companies that used questionable tax shelters are being given a grace period of lesser penalties by the U.S. Internal Revenue Service.

The IRS is offering accounting firms, law firms, banks and investment firms that created and sold tax shelters the service considers bogus a way out admitting what they've done and paying a fine, The New York Times said Tuesday.

However, the offending firms must name the clients who bought their bogus shelters.

Failure to accept the IRS offer could mean larger fines and possible criminal prosecution.
