GM deals with brake recall complaints

DETROIT, Feb. 12 (UPI) -- General Motors faces tough complaints about the partial recall of trucks and SUVs with bad brake sensors, months after announcing the recall.

Reports of accidents and near misses prompted GM to issue the recall in 20 states and the District of Columbia, where anti-icing road salt corrodes the anti-lock brake sensor.

But complaints from owners who don't live in the states affected and consumer groups are targeting GM for allegedly putting money before safety in issuing regional recalls, the Detroit News reports.

Kevin Vagt of Alexandria, Va., said he almost got in three accidents because his 2001 Chevy Suburban needed more time than normal to stop. And although neighbors 2 miles away in Maryland are covered by the recall, he said he had to fix the problem himself because Virginia-registered GM's aren't.

Karen Aldana, spokeswoman for the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, said customer complaints may prompt the agency to expand the recall.

Alan Adler, a spokesman for GM, said every affected vehicle, no matter where it is registered, will get the brake problem fixed for free. Adler said customers should call the GM service hotlines with any problems and that all dealers should be complying.
