Google says OK to Beijing censorship

BEIJING, Jan. 25 (UPI) -- U.S. search engine Google Inc. will comply with China's demand to censor material, just days after deciding to fight Washington over a subpoena on search data.

California-based Google said it would launch versions of its search and news Web sites in China that censor material deemed objectionable to authorities there, CNET reported Wednesday.

However, Google will post notes at the bottom of results pages that disclose when content has been removed, said Andrew McLaughlin, senior policy counsel for Google.

The decision drew immediate criticism from human rights activists who last week praised Google for fighting the U.S. government's subpoena to hand over random Web search data. Yahoo!, MSN and AOL had complied with that request.
