TOKYO, Dec. 26 (UPI) -- Japan's Nikkei 225 index topped 16,000 for the first time in five years Monday, fueled by news Seven & I planned to buy Millennium Retailing.
The Nikkei gained 166.30 points or 1.04 percent to 16,107.67 in a broad market.

China and Taiwan also advanced; Australia, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Malaysia, New Zealand, Philippines, Singapore and Sri Lanka were closed.
European and U.S. markets were closed.
