Smokers, heavy drinkers should pay more

NEW YORK, Dec. 21 (UPI) -- Most U.S. residents say people who smoke, drink heavily and skip seatbelts should pay more for insurance, a Wall Street Journal/Harris Interactive poll says.

However, one-third of the 2,007 adults in the online survey supported higher insurance fees on people who are overweight and just one-quarter agreed that infrequent exercise should result in higher insurance costs.

While more companies are instituting different insurance pricing for employees to influence unhealthy behaviors, the poll found opposition to the idea remains substantial.

More than 65 percent of respondents supported health insurance programs to stop smoking, manage chronic medical conditions, and provide alcohol, drug and gambling counseling, the newspaper reported Wednesday.
