Marines boost value of HF radio contract

MELBOURNE, Fla., Dec. 21 (UPI) -- The U.S. Marines increased from $75 million to $586 million a tactical radio deal with Florida-based Harris Corp., a major communications gear maker.

The Marine Corps Systems Command initially awarded Harris a 5-year contract in March for high-frequency radios to be used by U.S. and allied forces around the world, Harris said Wednesday.

The ceiling for that contract has just been lifted from $75 million to $586 million, with the first delivery order totaling about $52 million.

"The Harris AN/PRC-150 HF manpack radio, which provides Marines with secure, long-range voice and data capabilities even in the harshest conditions, has become the long-range combat net radio of choice for U.S. and allied military forces," Harris said.

"Its embedded information security features enable secure ground-to-ground and ground-to-air communications in all HF modes and in fixed-frequency modes with 'SINCGARS' radios."

Harris operates in 150 countries, has annual sales more than $3 billion and employs about 13,000 people, including 5,500 engineers and scientists.
