WASHINGTON, Dec. 15 (UPI) -- A Consumers Union study suggests seniors can save as much as $5,000 by switching to lower-cost drugs before selecting a Medicare drug plan.
The study examined cholesterol, high blood pressure, heart disease, arthritis pain and depression medications, and found seniors could save between $2,300 and $5,300 under Medicare Part D by switching to so-called "best-buy" medications.

The study found the switch -- which it recommends being made only after discussions with a doctor -- could prevent seniors from falling into the "doughnut hole" in Medicare prescription drug coverage.
