Report: 'Healthy' junk food no solution

LONDON, Dec. 6 (UPI) -- A report by Britain's Food Ethics Council says that "healthy" versions of junk food are not the secret to a good diet.

Dr. Tom MacMillan, the council's executive director, said that cutting levels of salt, sugar and fat in processed food is a step in the right direction but not a substitute for eating lots of fruit and vegetables, Sky News reported.

"But 'healthy junk' won't solve everything," he said. "We also need to fight poverty, regulate food marketing and deal with all the other factors that make it hard for many people to eat a healthy diet."

The report raps the government for emphasizing consumer choice instead of helping people with low incomes, who have the highest level of food-related health problems, eat better diets.
