Price war on books in Britain

LONDON, Dec. 3 (UPI) -- A price war has broken out among some of Britain's leading bookstores and many fear the discounts could put independent bookstores out of business.

Author Alan Bennett had advised readers to buy his memoir, "Untold Stories," from independent booksellers, because he feared the steep discounts offered by major book sellers would "drive independents out of business," reported the Daily Telegraph Saturday.

However, it appears many readers have ignored his plea, since "Untold Stories" -- with the recommended retail price of $34 -- is being sold by a large bookstore chain at half-price until Christmas Eve.

In fact, most of the hardcover books expected to sell well before Christmas are being sold for half-price at the major bookstores and some supermarkets, the Telegraph said.
