Gas price drop no help for car sales

DETROIT, Dec. 1 (UPI) -- The recent fall in gas prices has failed to bring an increase in sales of gas-guzzling SUVs in the United States.

Ford and GM are shifting production from trucks and sport utility vehicles to cars, the Washington Post reports.

Autodata Corp. reported that sales of new vehicles were down 2.8 percent in the United States in November compared to the same month in 2004. The big U.S. carmakers had the largest sales slumps.

Robert Schnorbus, chief economist at J.D. Power and Associates, told the newspaper that buyers remain wary of large vehicles because of uncertainty about gas prices.

"Even though prices are down from their peaks, I think there is still a big concern or big issue in buyers' minds," he said.

GM sales were down 7.6 percent in November, while Ford's dropped 15 percent. DaimlerChrysler sales were down 2.8 percent.

Toyota's U.S. sales rose 13 percent, and Honda's 8 percent. Nissan sales dropped 4 percent.
