Pay issue threatens children's program

LONDON, Nov. 28 (UPI) -- A survey shows 1-in-7 family doctors in Britain plan to opt out of providing immunizations to children because of pay cuts.

Another 10 percent of the general practitioners may stop providing such service because the money they are paid for children's vaccinations has dropped by more than half, reports The Times of London.

Any reduction in vaccine coverage would be "a population health disaster," the director of one public health trust was quoted as saying.

General practitioners complain that the changes in payments were introduced surreptitiously. Many are angry at the British Medical Association for allowing the changes to go through, The Times reported.

The Department of Health says that because only two vaccines are now administered, the workload is less and therefore the pay cut is justified.
