China buys Japanese, German bullet trains

BEIJING, Nov. 22 (UPI) -- China has plans to create a 7,400-mile high-speed railway network, using Japanese and German bullet trains.

The Chinese Railway Ministry will buy 60 InterCity Express trains from Germany's Siemens AG, each with eight cars, as well as 60 Shinkansen Hayate trains to be manufactured by a consortium of six Japanese companies, the Yomiuri Shimbun reported Tuesday.

The six Japanese firms are Kawasaki Heavy Industries Ltd., Hitachi Ltd., Mitsubishi Electric Corp., Mitsubishi Corp., Itochu Corp. and Marubeni Corp.

The project is expected to cost more than $83.9 billion and will include a high-speed link between Beijing and Shanghai.

In addition to the Japanese and German trains, France's high-speed TGV train was considered but was not accepted.
