Raytheon gets $1.3B missile radar contract

TEWKSBURY, Mass., Nov. 15 (UPI) -- The U.S. Army awarded Raytheon Co. a $1.3 billion contract to develop radar to protect ground troops from cruise missiles.

Raytheon's Integrated Defense Systems group will create an over-the-horizon cruise missile detection system that alerts air defense assets, Raytheon said Tuesday.

The company will begin testing the system in 2009 and conclude its work in 2011.

Work on the program will be performed at Raytheon sites in Massachusetts, California, Texas and Maryland. Raytheon's Integrated Defense Systems will develop the fire control radar and processing station. TCOM, LP, based in Maryland, will develop the aerostat and associated ground equipment.
