Shanghai set to be world's top port

SHANGHAI, Nov. 8 (UPI) -- Shanghai port authorities say their facility is about to overtake Singapore as the world's biggest maritime port in terms of cargo volume.

In the first 10 months of this year Shanghai had a freight volume of 363 million tons, contrasted to Singapore's 351 million tons, the Shanghai Daily reported Tuesday.

Xu Peixing, director of Shanghai Port Administration Bureau, said he expects throughput via the city's ports will reach 443 million tons by the end of this year and could exceed Singapore's total.

But Xu said it's too early to say Shanghai will replace Singapore to be the No. 1 worldwide, as Singapore is also stepping up development in port.

Last year, Shanghai surpassed Rotterdam to become the second-largest port in the world.
