Six unions unite to fight Delphi Corp.

DETROIT, Nov. 7 (UPI) -- Six U.S. unions Monday said they are taking off the gloves with bankrupt Delphi Corp. over its demands for big pay cuts.

The unions, representing 33,650 hourly Delphi workers and 5.5 million other active and retired members, are forming a coalition but declined to specify how they plan to retaliate against the nation's largest manufacturer, the Detroit Free Press said Monday.

Last month, Delphi asked the United Auto Workers to accept hourly wages of $9.50-$10.50, compared with their current $25-$27 an hour, plus higher out-of-pocket healthcare costs with no vision or dental insurance, frozen pensions, fewer vacation days and restricted overtime.

"We are outraged by Delphi's attempt to use the bankruptcy process to dictate the radical destruction of the living standards of America's industrial workers," the coalition said in a statement.

Delphi lost $4.8 billion last year and $741 million in first half 2005.

The coalition comprises the United Auto Workers, International Union of Electrical Workers, United Steelworkers, International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers and International Union of Operating Engineers.
