HOUSTON, Nov. 4 (UPI) -- The number of rotary rigs drilling for petroleum in the United States this week rose by 16 to 1,496, a level not seen for two decades.
According to figures released Friday by Baker Hughes Inc., this week's figure is up from 1,268 rigs working one year ago, the Oil & Gas Journal reported.

Most of the most recent increase came from land rigs. Regionally, the biggest increase came in Texas.
The last time 1,496 rotary rigs were working in the United States was in February 1986.
