Cancer-fighting drug warning level raised

WASHINGTON, Oct. 31 (UPI) -- Zevalin, a last-resort cancer drug, is causing alarm because of fatal side effects, prompting the Food and Drug Administration to issue a warning.

The FDA required the label on the drug Zevalin to be updated to disclose the risk of a possibly deadly skin reaction in consumers who take the drug, The Wall Street Journal reported Monday.

The drug already had a warning on its label.

Zevalin is used with the cancer drug Rituxan when no other treatments of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma work.

Drug maker Biogen Idec Inc. has sent a letter to doctors to explain the new warning label.
