Password changes may not help security

NEW YORK, Oct. 1 (UPI) -- A survey of almost 1,700 U.S. technology end users shows more than a quarter must manage more than 13 passwords at work.

Workplace password management frustrates 90 percent of those surveyed, and this frustration can lead to behaviors that could jeopardize IT security, according to the survey by RSA Security.

Because employees find it nearly impossible to keep track of ever-changing passwords, they tend to use ones they can easily remember, which means intruders can easily guess them, reported the New York Times Saturday.

The survey also finds most end users memorize passwords, but employees also resort to other, less secure means of tracking multiple passwords -- such as maintaining a password spreadsheet or other document stored on computer, recording a list of passwords on a PDA or other handheld device or keeping a paper record of passwords in an office/workspace.
