Two more die of bird flu in Indonesia

JAKARTA, Sept. 26 (UPI) -- Two more people have died from avian flu in Indonesia, raising the death toll to six, with another 20 being treated in hospitals.

Results announced by health officials said a 5-year-old girl who died last week and a 27-year-old woman who died Monday had been exposed to the H5N1 virus.

The BBC said a 2-year-old who died was buried before samples could be taken for testing to see if she too had bird flu.

The first case of human infection in Indonesia was announced in July, and last week Health Minister Siti Fadila Supari warned that Indonesia could be facing an epidemic.

Government officials said they expect delivery of 40,000 doses of the anti-viral drug Tamiflu this week, with a further 40,000 provided by Australia sometime soon, the report said.

Indonesia has carried out limited culling, preferring to vaccinate poultry because of the expense of compensating farmers.
