Breast cancer death rate drops

WASHINGTON, Sept. 22 (UPI) -- A report says that deaths from breast cancer have been falling in the United States.

Breast Cancer Facts and Figures, released by the American Cancer Society, reports a drop of about 2.3 percent a year since 1990. The group said the drop was the largest in women under the age of 50 but was experienced by all groups.

"The steady decrease in death rates since 1990 shows that we are making progress against breast cancer," said Dr. Stephen F. Sener, national volunteer president of the American Cancer Society.

The society said that changes in reproductive patterns, including more women postponing childbearing. Studies have shown that women who have children earlier and have multiple pregnancies are less likely to get breast cancer.

The society said that the next research step is to find more drugs like tamoxifen that reduce the risk of getting breast cancer.
