WASHINGTON, Aug. 12 (UPI) -- Three Washington, D.C., area governments are adding wireless Internet, or "WiFi," services in outdoor public areas.
A WiFi "hot spot" was turned on in Alexandria last week along an eight-block stretch of the city, and both Arlington and Montgomery counties also have WiFi plans in the works, the Washington Times reported Friday.
Alexandria's wireless Internet service, which cost the city $14,000, doesn't provide the secure connections recommended when using credit cards to pay bills or shop online.
Montgomery County plans to turn on WiFi access in Silver Spring by next week, and Arlington County's WiFi program could be active by the fall.
Users of laptop computers or personal digital assistants with wireless capability can easily connect to the Internet when they are in a hot spot.
