More women in Europe suffer hair loss

LONDON, Aug. 7 (UPI) -- Britain's National Health Service has approved adding hair extensions costing $3,600 for those suffering from alopecia, or premature hair loss.

An estimated 30,000 women in Europe suffer from alopecia -- believed to be caused by stress -- double from a decade ago.

Elizabeth Steel, the director of Hairline International, a society for alopecia sufferers in Britain, said hectic lifestyles and crash dieting among women might be the most likely causes, reported the Sunday Telegraph.

"There is no single cause, but one reason some women develop the condition is through an iron deficiency," she said.

"This can be caused by crash or yo-yo dieting, and a lifestyle that is becoming common in 30-something women: working long hours, not eating properly and leading stressful lives, which runs the body down."

Alopecia can also be triggered by some birth control pills.
