NEW YORK, Aug. 7 (UPI) -- Although many worry about car or industrial accidents, every four seconds an injury occurs in a U.S. home.
"Paring knives, scissors, envelopes, staple removers, shaving razors, hedge pruners, hard plastic packaging -- dealing with these everyday household items can make most rooms in the home a potential danger zone," says Dr. Richard O'Brien, an emergency medicine specialist.
"In the emergency department, I often see people who could have stopped the bleeding on their own at home if they had the right supplies and didn't panic."
Getting a cut during food preparation was the most-often cited reason for a bleeding wound, by a 2 to 1 margin, according to a survey conducted for Seal-On first aid products.
Almost 10 percent of people's last bleeding wounds occurred while working on their vehicles or garden machinery.
