School offers online phys-ed course

MINNEAPOLIS, Aug. 2 (UPI) -- Minneapolis Public Schools added phys-ed to its roster of online courses for students, a move that has been met with overwhelming enthusiasm.

"I've never seen a response like this to any course," said Frank Goodrich, one of two instructors teaching online physical education this summer to about 60 high school students.

The course requires students to work out hard at an activity of their choice for 30 minutes four times a week and report to their teachers by e-mail. Parents must certify the students did the workouts, The New York Times reported.

Goodrich said recent e-mail messages showed one student had done weight-training, another went swimming and a third played hockey. The students must document warm-ups, cool-downs and pulse rates before, during and after the workouts.

As in the real world, though, Goodrich said there were a few "slackers" enrolled who were heading for an F.
