Report: SUVS are going begging

DETROIT, July 25 (UPI) -- Resale values of many popular sport utility vehicles and pickups in the United States are falling.

Part of the cause is a supply glut. AutoTrader.com, an online vehicle seller, had 100,000 more SUVs listed in online classified ads today than it did a year ago.

Another problem is higher gasoline prices and lower sales of new SUVs and pickups, the Detroit News reported Monday. Together, the three factors are sharply reducing the value of used SUVs and pickups.

Edmunds.com, an online automotive shopping guide, said the average trade-in value of a year-old SUV is $24,374, down about 5 percent from a May 2004 average of $25,651. Trade-in value for a 3-year-old SUV has fallen 8 percent, from $19,075 in May 2004 to $17,573 in recent days.
