Germany pledges $1 million in aid for Doha

GENEVA, Switzerland, July 25 (UPI) -- The World Trade Organization announced Germany's plan to contribute more than $1 million to fund the Doha Development Agenda.

The Geneva-based trade body applauded Germany's contribution to support Doha's technical assistance. Since 2001, when Doha was created in Qatar, more than $6 million has been donated by members of the WTO to help finance Doha technical assistance activities. Doha was developed to help liberalize trade among developing nations.

"Germany's generosity plays an important role towards enhancing countries' participation in the Doha round of negotiations," said Supachai Panitchpakdi, director-general of the WTO. "Technical assistance is an essential tool to train developing countries' representatives and demand for it is high."
