Alaska to still register medical pot users

JUNEAU, Alaska, July 22 (UPI) -- Despite a Supreme Court decision that upheld federal laws banning medical marijuana over state laws, Alaskans can register with the state for marijuana.

David Marquez, Alaska's state attorney general, told the state Department of Health and Social Services the court's June 6 decision does not forbid the agency from registering medical marijuana users, the Anchorage (Alaska) Daily News reported Friday.

Alaska is one of 10 states that authorize medical marijuana use, if the user provides a doctor's prescription and registers with the state.

About 200 Alaskans are registered with the state program, according to Department of Law spokesman Mark Morones.
