AIG talks with authorities about settling

NEW YORK, July 11 (UPI) -- American International Group Inc. lawyers are talking with U.S. and New York authorities about settling accounting-related allegations against the insurer.

The Securities and Exchange Commission, New York Insurance Department and the state's attorney general are in preliminary talks, which began last month, with AIG to resolve problems with the company's accounting, the Wall Street Journal reported Monday.

New York filed a civil fraud suit against AIG in May, which also names former AIG Chairman and Chief Executive Maurice R. "Hank" Greenberg and former Chief Financial Officer Howard I. Smith.

Neither Smith nor Greenberg are involved in AIG's current talks with state and federal regulators.

A federal investigation of AIG's books continues.
