Oil falls sharply, recovers slightly

NEW YORK, July 7 (UPI) -- Crude oil prices fell Thursday after a series of deadly explosions rocked London's public transit system killing at least 37 people and injuring hundreds.

A barrel of high-quality crude fell to $60.73. In London, high-quality crude closed down at $58.98.

U.S. inventories helped temper the effects of both the Gulf storms and London bombings, particularly among petroleum products.

Heating oil in New York slipped to $1.7701 per gallon, but unleaded gasoline declined to $1.8075.

Crude oil inventories in the United States fell last week 3.6 million barrels to 324.9 million barrels, while gasoline supplies also dropped, falling 900,000 barrels to 215.3 barrels, the U.S. Energy Department said.

Stocks of both commodities remain well above historic averages. Meanwhile, propane, diesel and heating oil inventories rose.

"Strong imports into the Gulf Coast last week propelled inventories of propane up 3.4 million barrels to record the largest weekly gain during the 2005 stock-building season," the department said in a statement.
