NEA wants 25 percent pay hike

LOS ANGELES, July 5 (UPI) -- The U.S. largest teachers union will urge school districts to raise salaries for beginning teachers by about 25 percent to at least $40,000 a year.

New teachers make, on average, $29,733, USA Today reported Tuesday.

The 2.7-million-member National Education Association issued the call for at least $40,000 for beginning teachers came at the beginning of its annual meeting.

"That is going to attract qualified, certified people," says NEA President Reg Weaver. "And when you have qualified, certified people, you have people who are going to be able to close the achievement gap."
