U.S. not quite done with Richard Scrushy

NEW YORK, June 30 (UPI) -- Recently acquitted Richard M. Scrushy, whom U.S. prosecutors wanted behind bars over HealthSouth Corp.'s accounting woes, faces more legal fights.

The healthcare company founder, who was ousted in 2003, was acquitted Tuesday by an Alabama jury on all 36 criminal charges against him in the company's $2.7 billion accounting fraud.

Now prosecutors plan to appeal a federal judge's dismissal of three perjury charges against the 52-year-old Scrushy to the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals in Atlanta, the Wall Street Journal reported Thursday.

Meanwhile, Scrushy faces a two-year-old civil suit filed by the Securities and Exchange Commission, which accused him of accounting fraud, plus numerous civil shareholder suits over losses suffered in HealthSouth's accounting problems.
