Company evicts unwelcome geese

LA GRANGE, Ill., June 25 (UPI) -- Wild Goose Chase Inc., of La Grange, Ill., has signed nearly 140 clients for their goose-chasing business.

Goose Chase uses dogs, remote-controlled boats and laser pointers to harass unwelcome Canada geese from client's properties, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported Saturday. The firm has been hired by Milwaukee County, several golf courses and multiple housing complexes.

"Each goose produces three pounds of droppings a day," said Susan Hagberg, the company's president. "They can be a tremendous nuisance."

The company first sends trained border collies to herd the geese, usually into a nearby pond, and then employees send in remote-controlled boats to harass the geese into flying away. At night, the company flashes harmless laser pointers to confuse and scare the geese.

The company said their methods work best when carried out in the spring, before the geese nest. Otherwise, they tend to return.

Brian McCarrin, the company's field operations manager, said that occasionally an aggressive "goosezilla" will attack people or even dogs.

"Some geese are especially aggressive. They can be especially dangerous when kids try to feed them, because geese are right at a kid's eye level," he said.
